is that sausage worth this?
In this column, Nicholas Kristof explores the true workings of the pork industry. He discusses the inhumane actions some pork companies commit by turning pigs into cannibals and hindering them from mobility and social interaction. It is common for these industries to feed pigs the remains of their fallen friends and even the waste of those still living. The pigs are also confined in a small pen, not large enough for them to turn around. Due to these close quarters, pigs are contracting diseases, and in turn being fed antibiotics to prevent the diseases from spreading. This is an important issue not only because of the way the pigs are being treated, but also because of its effect on humans. We are consuming and becoming infected by the antibiotics being fed to the pigs. Also, the confinement of these pigs causes them to produce a vast amount of manure that pollutes our drinking water. Kristof is calling readers to action by presenting companies that are making a change in regards to their meat sources. Many companies have claimed to have stopped buying from industries that treat their animals inhumanely. By exhibiting the change that is being made, Kristof is encouraging readers that they can do something about this critical issue as well.
